Local Hero 2016 - Karen Watson (Christchurch)

Karen is behind the Familial Trust which was set up as a safe place for people with addictions, and their families, to access support, education, information and programmes on treatment.

Opened in early 2001, the trust now employs seven staff and has 12 volunteer group leaders.

Karen has facilitated 66 Intensive Outpatient Programmes and set up a children’s group "R.O.C.K.S” (Recovery of Cool Kids) which has up to 38 children attending and benefiting from expert support and counselling.

Karen has conducted more than 30,000 one on one counselling and support sessions and is always there to offer advice, support or a listening ear to anyone who might need it.
